The Future of Irish Music
Diarmuid McGuinness lives in a dark world, a world inhabited by depressingly gifted musical themes and mournful tunes. He can sing particularly well, his band whom are currently in turmoil consist of friends of his. You can clearly tell who the driving musical influence is within the group from this solo three track demo aptly titled If We Fall.
So what is it, then, that makes Diarmuid McGuinness so appealing? Ive tried to fathom this out and still dont have any meaningful answers, save to say that the combination of mind blowing vocals, Lennon-esque instrumentals and slit-your-wrist themes do seem to work.
The magical ingredient that pulls everything together and stands it up is McGuinnesss writing ability. Not songs in the true sense of the word, these songs are more like poems, and McGuinness often delivers them more like a poet than a singer, whispering to great effect in "If We Fall" and trying out words like "I left by the back door/With my wifes lovers smoking gun" in the reworking of" It Grows".
The new single, "Begin At The End" and other demo tracks l also heard sound great. Its good stuff, no scratch that, its the best god damn stuff Ive heard since Layne Stayley passed away. And Believe me thats the biggest compliment I can pay any singer songwriter/vocalist.
